Good Morning Sabah People,
We're excited to introduce an instant classic to our line-up: the Lockhart Sabah.
A deep-dyed matte black with a distressed, vintage texture & feel, our new Lockhart Sabah utilizes the same style of leather as our best-selling Fort Worth Brown.
We love how robust this leather is -- promising to age beautifully and be a lifelong companion on the many adventures to come.
We named them Lockhart -- after the vibrant town, a short 35 minute drive from Little Sabah Austin, that's known as the Barbecue Capital of Texas. We went there recently to visit our friends behind Mill Scale Metalworks - who better to put our hardy Lockhart Sabahs to work!
Enjoy.
Sincerely,
The Sabah Dealer

I first learned of Matt & Caleb Johnson via their craft: a beautifully designed yakitori grill that blends Texas BBQ tradition with Japanese style grilling. It was being operated by local chef, Colter Peck, at one of our backyard parties at Little Sabah Austin. I was mesmerized by that grill... not to mention Colter's delicious food.
So I was pleased to learn that Matt & Caleb happened to be Sabah-wearers and were also at the party. We had plenty to talk about! Alas, a friendship between Sabah & Mill Scale Metalworks, two businesses emphasizing craft, albeit from very different angles, began...

Matt & Caleb grew up in a small Central Texas town, spending many long afternoons in their father's auto-body shop. There, they developed an appreciation for the craft of welding & doing things by hand.
Fast forward a handful of years, the brothers were self-taught welders working in a custom-fabrication shop in Austin, Texas -- most notably building custom barbecues & live-fire cooking equipment for some of the biggest names in barbecue.
|
|
They left that work in 2018 to blaze their own trail: opening their own custom fabrication business out of a small shop in Lockhart, Texas; a town they'd come to love over the years, and just so happened to be the Barbecue Capital of Texas. They named their business, Mill Scale Metalworks.

Their work garnered quick acclaim from chefs & pit masters all over the United States, and as far away as Sweden. Pictured above is their 94-gallon offset smoker, designed for backyard use.
With everything they do made-to-order, BBQ aficionados have to get in line... wait times can be from months to years depending on what you're after.
What I love about their work, while the promise of a lifetime of open-fire cooking never wavers -- the unique patina and individual characteristics of each smoker are developed throughout its making. So no two smokers will ever be exactly the same. That's the mark of real handmade craft.
|
|
Most recently, they opened their first retail showroom in downtown Lockhart -- connected to their larger production facility.
In the showroom, you can view their work, place orders, and also find all types of other BBQ accoutrement & equipment. It'a delight to visit!

We want to say thank you to the wonderful Mill Scale team, for letting us into their world -- more on our visit in an upcoming newsletter, including a day-trip guide to Lockhart, Texas. Where to Next?!

My friend, Jake, Founder of Fair Harbor (maker of an excellent men's bathing suit!), sent me this image of his well-loved Fort Worth Brown Sabahs, which uses the same leather as our new Lockhart Sabahs. It felt fitting to share. Photo by Bryan Derballa.
