Good Afternoon Sabah People,

Our friends Joel Baca, an artist based in Brooklyn, and Taylor Rowe, a Director at The Clean Fight, recently traveled to Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Joel was born there; his art reflecting the vast landscapes and deep-rooted cultural heritage of his upbringing. You can learn more about his work on his website & instagram. Taylor has been visiting New Mexico her entire life; frequently road tripping there with family from her home state of Colorado.

Needless to say, the couple know New Mexico well. Wearing their favorite Babas, they shared notes & images along the way, which we've compiled into an itinerary of all their favorite things to do in magical Santa Fe below.

Packing For Santa Fe.

Georgia O’Keeffe’s Home & Studio.

"We always love returning to Santa Fe. Joel was born and raised in New Mexico and I grew up road tripping to Santa Fe from Colorado with my mom and grandma. Georgia O’Keeffe’s Home and Studio in Abiquiu pulls us like a magnet — the drive down Highway 84 offers enchanting mesas and a big blue sky replete with fluffy white clouds reminiscent of the artist’s series “Sky Above Clouds”. Her home will forever be our dream home — the pinnacle of minimalist aesthetic. The Womb Chair in her sitting room and BARWA Lounger in her studio are some of our favorite pieces of furniture. The rock collections displayed throughout pull you in and out of nature — an eccentric reminder of this special land, and her appreciation for it. As always, we left filled with fresh inspiration and overcome by a timeless serenity."

Ortega's Weaving Shop.

"On our way back, we turned east at Española to stop by Ortega's Weaving Shop. For eight generations, they’ve been weaving world-renowned Ortega blankets, vests, and coats with a showroom of Native American jewelry and pottery from nearby pueblos. They have a stunning large loom tucked into the back of the shop and we were lucky enough to see the weaving in action. Joel picked out a Chimayo Square Front Wool Vest, which he’s worn daily since. This is such a special place to learn about the weaving traditions inherent to Chimayo."

The Plaza of Santa Fe.

"The next morning, we started our day wandering around The Plaza. We love spending time by the Palace of the Governors at the New Mexico History Museum to visit the Native American artisans who for decades have displayed their turquoise and silver jewelry. We always stop by Shiprock Santa Fe — they have a stunning collection of Navajo rugs and blankets curated by fifth-generation art dealer Jed Foutz, who was raised on the Navajo Nation. Our favorite spot to grab a bite in The Plaza is Cafe Pasqual's — they feature local and seasonal ingredients. We got the Blue Lady Stacked Chicken Enchiladas (Christmas — both Red and Green Chile). We ended our night at Evangelo's with live music and a couple of bottles of Lone Star."

Ten Thousand Waves & Fritz Scholder.

"On our last day, we ventured up Artist Road towards Ten Thousand Waves — hot springs inspired by Japanese Onsen. Taylor indulged in their Signature Japanese Shiatsu Massage while Joel relaxed in the Grand Bath. Three hours at this tranquil hideaway washed away three years of living in NYC. We then enjoyed a leisurely lunch on the deck at Izanami Restaurant with a gorgeous view of Thompson Peak in the distance. Shadows danced across the hills as the sun shifted behind the clouds. The Black Sesame Noodles are a must-have. They have an incredible sake menu — our server recommended Indigo Sky “Tenkyu” which had an elegant, clean finish. We headed back into town and walked up and down Canyon Road, popping into all of the art galleries, ending the day at LewAllen Gallery. Brandon kindly showed us some archive pieces of Fritz Scholder, one of our favorite artists. He’s famed for his reinvention of the portrayal of Native Americans in art. “Cowboy Indian” from 1974 stopped us in our tracks. We’re still hoping we can bring this piece home one day!"
