Bargain Blend to Buy by the Case
2018 Skylark "Las Aves" Mendocino County Red Blend (Elsewhere $40) ($9.95)
"We've been lucky enough to land a few great deals from this winery over the years, but this is the best yet.”— Ryan Woodhouse, K&L Domestic Wine Buyer

A passion project launched in the early 2000s by two San Francisco-based sommeliers, Skylark seeks to create high-quality Rhône-inspired blends using Old World techniques and top-grade grapes. Their wines aim to bridge the gap in quality across various price points in California wine, harking back to classic Côtes-du-Rhône blends—juicy, versatile, everyday wines that leave little to be desired. "Las Aves," a newer release inspired by the sophisticated blends of Priorat, incorporates Cabernet Sauvignon, old-vine Carignan, Grenache, Syrah, and small amounts of Petite Sirah, resulting in a balanced profile with remarkable structure. Even at its original price, this wine over-delivers in quality and complexity. At under $10 a bottle, it's an unbelievable deal. We suggest buying in bulk—this is a bottle you won’t regret having around.

91 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Based on 36% Syrah, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Carignane, 11% Petite Sirah, and the rest Grenache, the 2018 Las Aves has a great nose of spicy red and black fruits, peppery herbs, chocolate, and some meaty notes to go with a fleshy, medium to full-bodied, round, supple, seamless red offering good mid-palate density, ripe, velvety tannins, and a great finish." A slightly unconventional, but superbly executed red blend focused on old vine Carignane, Grenache, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Inspired by the rich and powerful wines or Priorat, Spain - the Las Aves from Skylark Cellars is an out-and-out crowd pleaser! The seamless blend gives a beautiful balance of ripe, lush, dark fruit plus warm earth notes, roasted spices, and subtle leather. Medium to full bodied with great rich texture and plenty of depth and complexity. We've been lucky enough to land a few great deals from this winery over the years, but this is the best yet. The QPR on this wine is just ridiculous. Every single person I've poured it for has been impressed with how this wine hugely over-delivers for our extremely reasonable Insider's Advantage price. Load up on this everyday beauty while we still have it in stock, I'm confident you won't regret it! Cheers!

It's hard to imagine a wine that delivers as much as the Skylark Las Aves does at this price point! On the nose you'll find light herbal notes and a bit of smokiness. On the palate there are flavors of warm, dark cherries and plum that give way to touches of vanilla on the mid-palate. The finish is dry and lingering with notes of cedar and coffee. The tannins are soft and just grippy enough to pair with anything from takeout to steak dishes. This Spanish inspired blend is versatile enough to take to your next dinner party, or better yet, keep a few bottles around so you always have something to sip with your favorite pizza.

This North Coast "Spanish inspired" wine is an eclectic blend of 36% Syrah, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Carignane, 11% Petite Sirah, and 9% Grenache. The nose opens dark + dusty, sweet red and black cherries, dark bramblefruit then followed by oil-cured olives and freshly sharpened pencils. The palate has good dark fruit with a nice acidity and softened/integrated tannins. Bacon-fat and an herb sachet show up on the palate and then nose as the wine opens. It's hard to adequately express the cost to quality ratio in this wine, as anything will likely sound like hyperbole, but this is definitely one of the best "bargain" priced wines we've had so far this year. I'm really surprised we're able to be able to sell this wine at this price. Case up early and often because we're going to blow through this one.
