2018 Gramercy Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (Elsewhere $60) ($29.95) "It's just another impeccably made wine from this talented team that's well worth your time and money." — Jeb Dunnuck Recognizing the near-perfect growing conditions surrounding Walla Walla, sommelier-turned-winemaker Greg Harrington moved from New York to Washington after a tasting that left him blown away by the region’s potential. At Gramercy Cellars, which specializes in Rhône and Bordeaux-inspired wines, Harrington works exclusively with top vineyard sites, carefully timing harvests to ensure the most balanced grapes possible. The winery champions minimal intervention, using as little new oak as needed to let the terroir shine. This Cabernet is a standout, offering exceptional quality far beyond its price point—even before the 50% markdown. At $29.95, it’s a steal. 2018 Gramercy Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (Elsewhere $60) ($29.95) 94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The appellation 2018 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, which includes 4% Merlot, reveals a ruby/purple hue as well as brilliant notes of ripe cassis, darker currants, woodsmoke, graphite, and tobacco. Coming from a mix of sites and aged in 38% new French oak, it's flawlessly balanced, has ripe tannins, and a great finish. It's just another impeccably made wine from this talented team that's well worth your time and money." (07/2022) 94 points Wine & Spirits: "This is, in a sense, the opposite of a showstopper. Blended from Phinny Hill (75 percent) along with Octave, Bacchus and Dionysus vineyards, this leads with plum and tobacco scents only to have a sunny richness creep into the wine on cat feet, elegant and a bit elusive. Then the precise tannins on the finish feel uplifting and fresh." 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Gramercy was founded in 2005 with a dedication to Rhône varieties, but quickly felt the irresistible draw of Washington Cabernet, with wines like this showing the appeal. The aromas offer notes of dried herb, dark cherry, scorched earth and spice. It's the balance of the cherry and graphite flavors that most impresses. Cabernet is often big and bold. This wine shows its sophisticated side but with no shortage of intensity. It's a whole lot of delicious. *Cellar Selection* (SS)" (05/2022) 93 points Wine Advocate: "Beginning with a beautifully balanced nose, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon offers focus and precision with gorgeous aromas of dusty plum and elegant oak spices before showing delicate dusty red flowers. Medium to full-bodied, the wine is delightful and oak-tinged on the palate, with a balanced structure, fine-grained tannins and succulent acidity. The wine continues evolving in the mouth over the long, ripe and subtly spiced finish. (AM)" (05/2023) 93 points Vinous: "Deep, concentrated and layered, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is an extraordinarily good bottling by Gramercy Cellars. On the nose, it revels in ripe black currant tones that combine with suggestions of sagebrush, iodine and Earl Grey tea. The effortless palate is plush, generous and soft throughout the drinking experience. This is a rocking deal from a top-tier winery and fruit sourced from some of the very best vineyards in the state including Phinney Hill, Bacchus, and Dionysus vineyards. Crushed cassis, blackberry, pencil shavings, cedar, gravelly minerals, hints of lavender and wintergreen (could be Pauillac). Perfectly groomed tannins and subtle oak framing really show the pedigree of the fruit and excellence of the winemaking team. I love the balance and pure varietal expression here. Delicious now and for the next 10+ years. Stellar value at 50% off MSRP! Ryan Moses | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: May 03, 2024 To me, this is Columbia Valley Cab to a T, with a richness and deep fruit that makes top Washington State Cab so irresistible. Aromas of licorice, smoky cassis, vanilla, and baking chocolate lead to a rich but balanced palate covered in plum, currants, and a hint of juicy blackberry on a long, spice-lined finish. It is deftly judged and shows a great sense of place. There's certainly a lot going on here, especially the price we're offering right now at 50% under MSRP. Alexandre Tweedie | K&L Staff Member | Review Date: September 12, 2024 At full price, Gramercy consistently creates some of my favorite wines coming from the Columbia and Walla Walla Valleys of Washington, but at nearly half off, these wines are now completely over-delivering for their price, and this Cabernet is absolutely delicious! With the aromatic presence of an ink well filled vetiver cologne, warm clay pots steeping whole leaf puerh tea, a cigar humidor being used as a temporary chocolate tempering station - Northerly masculinity, very bold but deeply elegant. The palate takes this masculine tendency towards musk and ambergris, and provides dollops of deep black plums, slightly mentholated sweet tobacco leaf, and an incredibly lengthy and extended finish of espresso roast, tapenade savor, and dark earthy blackberry. I love Gramercy's wines, and I deeply love our current pricing on their 2018 vintage! |
