"Vietti is one of the most dynamic wineries in the appellation." — Monica Larner, Wine Advocate One of the most anticipated allocations of the year has just arrived: new releases from Vietti. Their classics from Rocche, Brunate, Lazzarito, and Ravera consistently rank among the best of any vintage. In recent years, they have added another incredible dimension to their portfolio with cru bottlings from the famed Cerequio and Monvigliero vineyards. Regardless of the bottling, Vietti continues to craft some of the most remarkable expressions of Barolo's most prized terroir.
2020 Vietti "Castiglione" Barolo ($62.99) 94 points James Suckling: "Racy and focused. I like the aromas of lavender, violet and white roses alongside strawberry, cranberry and stone. Medium body, with firm and fine tannins that are long and succulent. Its fine and polished. Vegan. Needs three to four years to come together." (02/2024) 93 points Wine Advocate: "Always a popular choice, the Vietti 2020 Barolo Castiglione (made with a blend of fruit from multiple MGA sites) has a voluptuous approach with dark fruit, cola, wild berry coulis and smoky tar. The wine wears a hot vintage well, with accessible and powdery tannins for near or medium-term drinking. In terms of texture, the Castiglione has a little more brawn and body compared to your standard Barolo. (ML)" (04/2024) 93 points Vinous: "Fragrant, polished and vibrant right out of the gate, the 2020 Barolo Castiglione displays beautifully-lifted notes of crushed red berry fruit, rose petal, mint, white pepper and orange peel. This classically built, mid-weight Barolo is classy to the core. Like all the 2020s here, it will benefit from time in bottle or a good decant. (AG)" (11/2023) 2020 Vietti "Roncaglie Masseria" Barbaresco ($129.99) 94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Coming from a cru that lies in close proximity to the Tanaro river and can ripen a bit earlier, the 2020 Barbaresco Roncaglie offers an attractive and supple bouquet of dried strawberries, herbes de Provence, dusty earth, and fennel. Medium-bodied and approachable, it has fine tannins, an elegant feel, and a clean finish. It is already showing well and will have a wide window for enjoyment over the next 10-12 years. (AF)" (05/2024) 94+ points Vinous: "The 2020 Barbaresco, from vines in Roncaglie, sizzles with tension. Bright, red-toned fruit, orange peel, mint, white pepper and crushed rocks are all beautifully delineated. In many vintages, the Roncaglie is quite showy. That is hardly the case in 2020, a vintage in which the wine is classically austere and in need of time. Super-classic. (AG)" (11/2023) 2020 Vietti "Lazzarito" Barolo ($229.99) 96+ points Wine Advocate: "Lazzarito stands out as one of the strongest wines in this portfolio of new releases from Vietti. With fruit from Serralunga d'Alba, the 2020 Barolo Lazzarito comes in at a very high threshold in terms of complexity, offering dark cherry, crème de cassis, violet macaron, dried herb and lavender. The wine's perfumes remind me of the south of France in summer. It shows elegant tannins, streamlined intensity and good acidity. (ML)" (04/2024) 95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "From Serralunga, the 2020 Barolo Lazzarito displays more sapidity on opening, with aromas of fresh sage, balsamic herbs, preserved strawberries, and tea leaf. Medium-bodied, it is more structured, with broad shoulders, ripe tannins, and a more grounding sensibility without being heavy. It shows more savory richness, although is light on its feet. (AF) " (05/2024) 93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Hailing from the esteemed Lazzarito cru in Serralunga d'Alba, this Barolo draws you in with its warm, spice-laden bouquet and alluring dark fruit aromas. Lifted and inviting from the start, the palate is plump and juicy, featuring a delightful interplay of tart plum flavors and elegant, well-structured tannins that leave you wanting more. (JP)" (09/2024) 2020 Vietti "Brunate" Barolo ($249.99) 95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2020 Barolo Brunate is a more approachable and open wine in the range, with aromas of candied berries, blackberries, rocky soil, and a hint of purple flowers. Its rounder in the palate, with ripe tannins and a good fresh lift on the finish, with notes of tea leaf and dried apricots. Theres more stuffing, but it remains true to its character. Drink 2025-2040. (AF)" (05/2024) 95 points Wine Advocate: "The Vietti 2020 Barolo Brunate has a dark and spicy side that is infused throughout the fruit. Dark cherry and blackcurrant are folded into ferrous earth, grilled rosemary, aniseed and a hint of fresh mint. Brunate tends to be quite austere and firm in terms of its aromas, and this vintage shows those qualities well. In fact, the character of the site comes through clearly. The wine has a precise, angular personality, and the fruit feels compact. (ML)" (04/2024) 95 points Wine Enthusiast: "This Barolo from the renowned Brunate cru captivates with its youthful energy, showcasing a vibrant bouquet of tart sour cherries, unripe raspberries, and an enticing medley of medicinal herbs. On the palate, a classic structure emerges, framed by firm, fine-grained tannins that support the wine's delicate red fruit flavors, subtle earthiness, and hints of dried rose petals. With its polished elegance this Barolo is poised to develop even greater complexity over time. Drink 2025 - 2045. *Cellar Selection* (JP)" (09/2024) 94 points Vinous: "The 2020 Barolo Brunate is a dark, beguiling wine. Black cherry, dried herbs, leather, game, licorice and incense lend gorgeous sepia-toned nuance. Brooding and inward, the 2020 clearly needs time. It is a super-classic Brunate that is hard to read in the early going, but the weight, substance and power are clearly there. Dense, meaty and dark, the 2020 shows Serralunga-like intensity. (AG)" (11/2023) 2020 Vietti "Monvigliero" Barolo ($249.99) 97 points Wine Enthusiast: "Prepare to be enchanted by a Barolo that effortlessly lifts out of the glass with aromas of crushed raspberries, wild strawberries, and succulent red cherries, intertwined with delicate rose petals and violets. A subtle hint of stem adds an alluring complexity to the bouquet, drawing you in. The palate is plush and forward, revealing layers of juicy red currants, pomegranate, and a touch of sweet spice. This beautifully crafted wine showcases the finesse and grace of Nebbiolo, with silky tannins and bright acidity that create a harmonious balance. This stunning Barolo is a testament to the skill of the winemaker and the unique terroir of the region. Drink now - 2035. (JP)" (09/2024) 95 points Decanter: "Monvigliero is one of the most elegant crus from Verduno, which is one of the coolest areas in Barolo, producing wines of rare grace. Vietti's 2020 is a delight, characteristic of the year, full of cinnamon, violet, raspberry and vibrant depth. Zesty acidity seamlessly integrates with velvety, light but savoury tannins, and the wine only thins out a little on the finish. (AF)" (03/2024) 95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "First produced in 2018, the 2020 Barolo Monvigliero sees 60% whole cluster fermentation, which contributes to a bit of spice that comes through in the wine. Offering notes of saline, cinnamon, cranberries, white pepper, and orange peel, its lean and weightless on the palate, an elegant and graceful red with supple, fine tannins and a clean mouthfeel. Highly refined, this very pretty wine is going to improve over the next 7-10 years. (AF)" (05/2024) 95 points Wine Advocate: "A relatively new departure for Vietti, the 2020 Barolo Monvigliero is soft and delicate with pretty floral aromas, dried iris, powdered spice and a hint of tar or road pavement. The inaugural vintage was 2018. Made with 60% whole-cluster fruit during fermentation, the wine has a moment of tartness, punchy highlights, sweet grenadine and cranberry jelly. It ages in large oak casks for 24 months. (ML)" (04/2024) 2020 Vietti "Cerequio" Barolo ($249.99) 97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2020 Barolo Cerequio is fantastic on opening, with aromas of wet asphalt, dried raspberries, cranberry, and fresh roses. Medium-bodied, it has a more vertical feel through the palate, with fine tannins and fresh spine of acidity. Drink 2026-2040. (AF) " (05/2024) 95+ points Vinous: "The 2020 Barolo Cerequio once again confirms that buying this vineyard is one of the smartest decisions Vietti ever made. A wine of nuance and class, the Cerequio captures all the pedigree of this great site. Crushed red berry fruit, kirsch, blood orange, spice and mint soar out of the glass, all framed by nervy tannins that convey classicism. This is an exotic, racy Barolo. (AG) " (11/2023) 94 points Wine Advocate: "The Vietti 2020 Barolo Cerequio (with 3,866 bottles made) has a little more hot-vintage thickness or softness on the mid-palate and shows aromas of dark cherry, dried mint, licorice root and naval orange. The fruit is a little more one-dimensional in 2020, although the acidity is there and the fruit tannins feel velvety and chalky. The wine completes malolactic fermentation in barrique and then goes into large oak casks for two years. (ML)" (04/2024) 2020 Vietti "Ravera" Barolo ($249.99) 97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Coming from the hill of La Morra (the fresher corner of the Barolo region), the nose of the 2020 Barolo Ravera boasts a lovely complete bouquet of licorice, rose petal, and fresh cherries, with a bright lift. Raised only in large cask, this medium-bodied Barolo is refined on the palate, with fine tannins, a silky mouthfeel, and a balanced and harmonious feel. It offers a Burgundian aesthetic and a long, graceful finish. (AF)" (05/2024) 95 points Wine Advocate: "The Vietti 2020 Barolo Ravera offers dark fruit, cherry and blackcurrant enhanced by soft spice. You also get a sun-kissed note of eggplant, tomato leaf and ferrous earth. Ravera displays strong lines with good acidity and firm tannic backbone. It closes dry and ages in large oak botte only. This is one of the most eyeballed MGAs sites. Ravera, with its open mountain skyline and cool temperatures, is seen as one of the best sites in the appellation, especially as the climate changes. (ML)" (04/2024) 94 points Vinous: "Picked on October 9 and 10, the 2020 Barolo Ravera has plenty of Ravera classicism and tension, but also feels a bit light in the mid-palate. Ravera is never a huge wine in body, but the depth is often there, even if expressed in an understated and more linear manner. The 2020 lacks that depth. Red-toned fruit, blood orange, mint, spice and white pepper lend brilliance throughout. (AG)" (11/2023) 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "The nose is immediately captivating, offering a blend of black macerated cherries and a unique crushed vitamin note, complemented by delicate baby roses and fresh green herbs. On the palate, the wine showcases a robust structure, with firm and chewy tannins that grip the tongue. As the wine opens, its true potential is revealed. (JP)" (09/2024) 2020 Vietti "Rocche di Castiglione" Barolo ($249.99) 98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A medium red hue, the 2020 Barolo Rocche Di Castiglione offers more complexity and is more nuanced in the glass, with notes of dried raspberries, tangerine, roses, dried herbs, and cedar. Medium-bodied, it is crunchy with an elegant feel but has balanced structure and retains a somewhat more chiseled feel thats true to the vintage. It has a lot to enjoy now and also has a wide drinking window. (AF)" (05/2024) 96 points Wine Advocate: "The Vietti 2020 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is a very delineated wine with sharp ferrous notes, cherry cola, redcurrant and chalky mineral. It is extremely precise in terms of its aromas. The effect is direct and layered, showing different sides and increasing complexity as it opens in the glass. Dried floral notes, purple flower and iris also appear delicately. The chalky tannins feel abrupt at this young stage, but this wine is built to last nonetheless. (ML)" (04/2024) 96 points Vinous: "The 2020 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is a magical wine from a magical site. It marries finesse and volume to a degree that is not found in most of the other wines in this range. Castiglione Falletto is the center of the Barolo production zone, literally and figuratively, the place where many different soil types meet. As a result, the wines often possess mind-blowing balance, which is very much the case here. (AG)" (11/2023) |
