This new documentary about the mysterious jazz musician and bandleader Sun Ra tells the fascinating story of his trailblazing Afrofuturist music. It features rare archival footage and interviews with longtime collaborators like Marshall Allen, the Sun Ra Arkestra’s current leader who just celebrated his 100th birthday.

As Wayne Kramer said in his interview, “Sun Ra is multitudes.” His music was old and new, and challenged even the broad descriptor of “avant-garde jazz." The music is angry, joyful, humorous, deadly serious and imbued with an optimistic search for the impossible. I first encountered Sun Ra in college and was mesmerized by the song “We Travel the Spaceways” and the film, Space is the Place, which I saw on an old VHS at a friend’s house. But what I came to understand over time is that the space motif was an ingenious metaphor. Sun Ra’s philosophy was a deep meditation to advance Black conscious and questioned the foundations of Western Civilization overall. Sun Ra sought to unlock the potential of human existence to look beyond “the possible” to create a better world for humanity.
