A report from James Suckling featured "Italy's Superb Reds" and one of the special wines leading the charge was the epic 2022 Sette Ponti Oreno! Receiving 99 points and a wordy but tantalizing review, this is one to stuff your cellar with!
Oreno was first created in 1999 by Dr. Antonio Moretti Cuseri, a wine lover who, in his travels, was blown away by the elegance of Bordeaux varietals. It was from that love of Bordeaux that he decided to plant Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot at his own estate.
The name Oreno comes from a stream that crosses the estate, precisely in an area rich with clay, this is soil perfect for Merlot. The Cabernet Sauvignon was planted in vineyards with soil more suited to its needs, with an abundance of pebbles in the soil to ensure proper drainage. These varying soil types are perfectly suited to each grape and the additions of Cabernet Franc and a little Petit Verdot make everything come together in tremendous fashion!
This is not only one of the most anticipated vintages in decades but is also likely set to be one of the most exciting collector wines this year. With the price of Tignanello, Sassicaia, Guado al Tasso and many others skyrocketing, Oreno continues to come in well under $100 making this one of the top collector buys in all of Tuscany!
Grab it while you can because every collector and Italian wine lover will be grabbing as much as they can get their hands on!
"There’s a purity and beauty to this that impresses you the minute you put your nose in the glass. So aromatic. Flowers, graphite, blackcurrants and hints of gunmetal. Medium- to full-bodied with tannins that coat your mouth but give a feeling of fine cashmere. The length and intensity is calm but rather endless. 45% merlot, 40% cabernet sauvignon,10% cabernet franc and 5% petite verdot. From organically grown grapes. Best after 2028." - 99 Points James Suckling
