Man of a century: Former President Jimmy Carter dies at 100
Jimmy Carter, the 100-year-old former US president and Nobel peace laureate who rose from humble beginnings in rural Georgia to lead the nation from 1977 to 1981, died Sunday at his home in Plains, Georgia -- the same small town where he was born and once ran a peanut farm before becoming governor of the Peach State and running for the White House. Carter died "peacefully" at his home in Plains, "surrounded by his family," The Carter Center said in a statement. Carter was the nation's longest-lived president and also one of the most active after leaving office.

Big Lots sold to Gordon Brothers to keep outlets operational
Big Lots, which filed for bankruptcy protection in September, has secured an agreement to keep hundreds of stores and distribution centers operational. Big Lots revealed it will be sold to Gordon Brothers Retail Partners, a firm known for working with distressed companies. Gordon Brothers said it intends to transfer Big Lots' stores, distribution centers, and other assets to various retailers and operate them under the Big Lots brand. The company will also take over up to two of Big Lots' distribution centers.

European Union's universal charger regulations take effect
EU rules requiring all new smartphones, tablets and cameras to use the same charger came into force over the weekend, in a change Brussels said will cut costs and waste. Manufacturers are now obliged to fit devices sold in the 27-nation bloc with a USB-C, the port chosen by the EU as the common standard for charging electronic tools. The EU has said the single charger rule will simplify the life of Europeans and slash costs for consumers.

Trio of air tragedies mar holiday travel week

In a 24-hour period over the holiday weekend, three passenger planes crashed across the globe in South Korea, Canada and Norway. In South Korea, a Boeing 737-800 jet with 181 passengers onboard veered off course, crashing into a wall; an Air Canada DH8 plane became engulfed in flames after a crash landing in Nova Scotia; and an Amsterdam-bound flight to Norway made an emergency landing following a "hydraulic failure" on a Boeing 737-800 at Torp Airport. The trio of incidents mark at least four crashes in seven days globally.

Biden says he could have defeated Trump

President Joe Biden says he believes that he could have beaten Donald Trump in the recent election if his party hadn't pressured him to drop out of his reelection campaign. Although he admitted errors that led to the end of his presidency, including his bad debate performance against Trump, Biden and some aides think he should have stayed in the race despite pressure from Democrats to step aside for Vice President Kamala Harris. Those same aides believe Biden would have beaten Trump but added neither they nor the president blame Harris.

Trump sides with Musk in H-1B visa debate

President-elect Donald Trump sided with tech barons like Elon Musk, saying that he backs a special visa program that helps highly skilled workers enter the country. An angry back-and-forth, largely between Musk and traditional anti-immigration Trump backers, erupted in fiery fashion, with Musk vowing to "go to war" over H-1B visas. Trump's insistent calls for curbs on immigration were central to his election win, vowing to deport undocumented immigrants and limit legal immigration.
