Biden pushing for Gaza deal before his administration ends
A Gaza truce and hostage release deal is close and could be finalized in the final week of President Joe Biden's term, White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said Monday. Biden spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and called the ruler of mediator Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, as negotiations intensified. Biden has been pushing to get a deal between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas before he leaves office in one week and hands over to Donald Trump, who has drawn a hard line against Hamas negoitators.

Japan PM scolds Biden for nixing US Steel-Nippon Steel deal
Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba told President Joe Biden that his blocking of Nippon Steel's takeover of US Steel raised "strong" concerns in both countries. The comments came in a three-way call with the president of the Philippines about China. Citing national security concerns, Biden nixed Nippon Steel's $14.9 billion acquisition of US Steel earlier this month, irking close ally Japan where the U.S. has some 54,000 military personnel.

New Jersey ranks last on list of best states for retirement
A new survey ranks the best places to retire in the US, and New Jersey sits at the bottom of the list. According to the rankings by Seniorly, the Garden State ranks dead last due to scoring poorly on nine factors, including affordability, quality of life and access to affordable healthcare. The 2025 list names New Jersey as the worst state to retire due to the high cost of living, subpar access to arts and recreation, and an unhealthy senior population.

LA wildfires spark storm of misinformation

President-elect Donald Trump and Musk have stepped up criticism of the governor's handling of the devastating blazes that have killed at least 24 people and displaced tens of thousands as winds intensified. Hegseth leads Trump nominees on hot seat

Pete Hegseth, who President-elect Donald Trump tapped to be his Secretary of Defense, is one of several nominees being questioned this week. Hegseth turned heads by calling for the restoration of the names of US military bases that honored Confederate generals, including Fort Bragg (now Liberty) in North Carolina. Hegseth, a combat veteran and former Fox News host, is expected to face sharp questioning during Senate committee confirmation hearings that begin Tuesday.
