Biden, Trump to meet at White House today

Political rivals President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump will meet in the Oval Office today. It's part of a long-standing tradition in which the outgoing president and the president-elect come together to discuss the transition of power, key issues, and plans for the upcoming administration. Trump accepted the invitation, saying he was "looking forward to it" and appreciated the congratulatory call. However, after losing the 2020 election, Trump, a Republican, did not invite Biden, a Democrat, to the White House for the traditional postelection meeting.

US bans flights to Haiti amid gang violence

The US banned all civilian flights to Haiti for a month on Tuesday, a day after a jetliner was shot at on approach to the capital and as a new prime minister took the reins of a nation ravaged by poverty and gang violence. The FAA's move came after a Spirit Airlines jetliner arriving from Florida in Port-au-Prince was hit by gunfire and had to reroute to the Dominican Republic, while Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime was sworn in on Monday. Haiti remains cut off from the rest of the world, with its main airport closed and bursts of gunfire close to the capital.

Well-lit surfboards may deter shark attacks

Covering your surfboard in bright lights sounds like an open invitation to great white sharks, but research released Tuesday by Australian scientists found it might actually stave off attacks. Biologist Laura Ryan said the predator often attacked its prey from underneath, occasionally mistaking a surfer's silhouette for the outline of a seal. Ryan and her fellow researchers showed that seal-shaped boards decked with bright horizontal lights were less likely to be attacked by great white sharks.

What beach consistently ranks as No. 1 in the world for shark attacks?

Monday's answer: The 22nd and 24th President Grover Cleveland was the first to serve non-consecutive terms (1885-89, 1893-97). Donald Trump (2016-20, 2025-) will be the second following his inauguration.
