Questions swirl about Biden on the Fourth

President Joe Biden took to the airwaves on July 4 fighting to show he is fit to serve another term, trying to halt Democratic panic triggered by his disastrous debate with Donald Trump. As Americans gathered for the Independence Day holiday, concern swelled over the 81-year-old incumbent's mental acuity, with rumblings within his party about finding a replacement candidate before November's election. And with polls showing Trump extending a lead after last week's televised showdown, Biden finds himself under pressure to demonstrate his capacity to lead.

Israel eyes Gaza truce as Hezbollah bombs

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered his spy chief to Qatar for talks with mediators on a Gaza war ceasefire that could see Hamas militants release hostages seized in the October 7 attack on Israel. On Israel's other front, Lebanon's Hezbollah said it launched more than 200 rockets and explosive drones Thursday at Israeli military positions as fears of a broader war continue to soar.

The WMO said the record-breaking tropical cyclone intensified rapidly, picking up energy over a warmer Atlantic Ocean and developing into a system with lots of heavy rain -- a potential sign of things to come due to climate change. Beryl is finally losing steam as it heads to the Texas-Mexico border.
