If exit polls are confirmed, UK Labour leader Keir Starmer, at the age of 61, will become the oldest person to become British prime minister in almost half a century. Exit polls in Thursday's general election projected a return to power for the Labour party and an end to nearly a decade-and-a-half of Conservative party rule. The married father-of-two is unlike most modern politicians: he had a long and distinguished career before becoming an MP and his political views are rooted in pragmatism rather than ideology.

Microsoft reaches $14 million settlement with employees
Microsoft agreed to a $14 million settlement to resolve claims by the California Civil Rights Department that the company illegally penalized employees for taking medical or family-care leave. The CCRD accused Microsoft of retaliating against workers who took parental, disability, pregnancy, or family-care leave since 2017. The workers, many of whom were women and disabled, say they were unfairly denied raises, promotions, and stock awards.

GM to pay government $146 million in fuel-efficiency fines
General Motors will pay the federal government $146 million in penalties after it was found that 5.9 million of its older vehicles were non-compliant with fuel economy and emission standards. The carmaker's vehicles from 2012 to 2018 did not comply with federal fuel economy requirements. The enforcement covered 4.6 million SUVs and full-size pickups and 1.3 million midsize SUVs.

Israel eyes Gaza truce as Hezbollah bombs

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered his spy chief to Qatar for talks with mediators on a Gaza war ceasefire that could see Hamas militants release hostages seized in the October 7 attack on Israel. Amid new optimism over a possible breakthrough, Netanyahu called a meeting of his security cabinet for late Thursday to discuss new Hamas proposals. On Israel's other front, Lebanon's Hezbollah said it launched more than 200 rockets and explosive drones Thursday at Israeli military positions as fears of a broader war continue to soar.

Hurricane Beryl sets a horrific tone: WMO

The World Meteorological Organization, which is tracking Hurricane Beryl's deadly course through the Caribbean, said that more storms with its hallmarks could be expected in the future. The WMO said the record-breaking tropical cyclone intensified rapidly, picking up energy over a warmer Atlantic Ocean and developing into a system with lots of heavy rain -- a potential sign of things to come due to climate change. Beryl is finally losing steam as it heads to the Texas-Mexico border.
