French coalition blocks far-right takeover

A loose alliance of French left-wing parties thrown together for snap elections was on course Sunday to become the biggest parliamentary bloc and beat the far right, according to shock projected results. The New Popular Front was formed last month after President Emmanuel Macron called snap elections, bringing together socialists, greens, communists and the hard-left into one camp. Projections showed no group could form an absolute majority, and the left-wing NFP ahead of both Macron's centrist Ensemble and Marine Le Pen's far-right RN.

Israel-Hamas war rages into 10th month

Israel carried out deadly air strikes in the Gaza Strip as the war entered its 10th month on Sunday, with fighting raging across the Palestinian territory and fresh diplomatic efforts under way to halt the violence. Israel has said it will send a delegation in the coming days to continue truce talks with Qatari mediators that began recently in Doha. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's spokesman said "gaps" remained with Hamas on how to secure a ceasefire and hostage release deal.

NATO turns 75 amid war, winds of change

NATO's 75th anniversary summit was meant to showcase the triumph of a larger, stronger alliance. Instead, leaders are coming together in Washington amid setbacks in Ukraine and electoral headwinds on both sides of the Atlantic. US President Joe Biden plans to welcome leaders of the 32-nation transatlantic alliance for three days from Tuesday. But the star of the summit is set to be Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who is looking for firm signs of support in its war with Russia.
