FEMA head cites climate change as Helene's death toll rises
The head of FEMA blamed climate change for Hurricane Helene's devastating impact, which includes "historic flooding" from the Florida coast to the Appalachian Mountains. The death toll rose to at least 88 as FEMA'S top official reported "significant impacts" in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee, with "damage to water systems, communication, roads, critical transportation routes, as well as several homes that have been just destroyed." There was "historic flooding" in North Carolina, especially in the western part of the state where flooding and mudslides washed out roads and stranded residents and tourists.

U.S. port operators and shipping companies are preparing for a looming strike by union dockworkers on the East and Gulf coasts that could cost the U.S. economy billions a week. The contract between the International Longshoremen's Association and the United States Maritime Alliance, which represents ocean carriers and port terminal operators, expires at the end of Monday, setting the stage for a union-wide strike that could cost the U.S. economy $4.5 billion to $7.5 billion a week, according to report estimates.

Harris rises in polls but margins razor thin

Vice President Kamala Harris has a 4.2 percentage point lead over Donald Trump in latest national polling averages but the margins are razor thin in a number of battleground states, leaving the election a toss up. The Hill and Decision Desk HQ give the Harris campaign a 56% chance of winning in November, with caveats. The analysis says the race will come down to seven battleground states, where neither Harris nor Trump have an advantage of 3 points or more, and in three -- Arizona, Georgia and North Carolina -- the margin is within 1 point.
