    The largest private company in the US is quietly firing about 8,000 employees right before Christmas. Cargill, a major ingredients business and food production company, has been hit hard after grocery prices dropped recently as crops the company trades, including wheat, corn and soybeans, hit new lows. Cargill's businesses fell short of reaching their earnings goals in fiscal 2024, with less than a third of their businesses doing so.

Trump offers to make Canada '51st state'

After revealing his plans to implement a 25% tariff on all Canadian products sold to the US, President-elect Donald Trump reportedly mocked Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau by telling him that Canada could become the 51st state of the United States. Trudeau traveled to Mar-a-Lago to meet with Trump after he threatened to impose tariffs on trade between the US and Canada. Trump indicated that the tariffs are punishment for Canada's inability to prevent illicit substances and undocumented immigrants from entering the U.S. through their border, which Trudeau vowed to provide increased efforts.

Amazon launches AI models to rival big tech

Amazon on Tuesday unveiled a suite of artificial intelligence models in its boldest move yet to compete with tech-giant rivals in the AI sector. The launch of its own line of foundation models marks Amazon's latest push to strengthen its position against forerunners Microsoft, Google, Meta and OpenAI. Until now, Amazon's AI offerings through its AWS cloud service had largely been limited to providing access to models from other companies, including Anthropic, an AI startup it backs

Trump ranks among least wordy politicians

A study assessed the usage of words used by politicians in the United States and the United Kingdom to determine the person who uses fewer words to get their message across. When it comes to speaking, Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene (380.4) and Democrat Nancy Pelosi (394) use the least amount of words when communicating. Vice President-elect J.D. Vance (401.6) and President-elect Donald Trump (408.9) are next on the list, likely due to their "hit first, think later" styles.
