Trump threatens to reclaim Panama Canal over shipping fees
President-elect Donald Trump slammed what he called unfair fees for US ships passing through the Panama Canal and threatened to retake control of the waterway. Trump also hinted at China's growing influence around the canal, a worrying trend for American interests as US businesses depend on the channel to move goods between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The canal, which was built by the US in 1914, was returned to Panama in 1999 under a deal signed by Democratic president Jimmy Carter.

The Senate voted to boost Social Security benefits for nearly 3 million Americans by repealing two provisions that reduce or eliminate retirement benefits for public service workers like teachers, firefighters and police officers who receive pensions. The Social Security Fairness Act was passed by a 76-20 vote that included all of the chamber's Democrats and 27 Republicans. The House passed the measure earlier this month in a 327-75 vote.

Stellantis is reversing a decision to lay off 1,100 workers at its US Jeep plant in Ohio, following the ouster of embattled CEO Carlos Tavares. The automaker had announced the job cuts at the plant in Toledo, Ohio in early November, saying it was part of an effort to "regain its competitive edge" amid struggles with falling sales. Stellantis, a 14-brand group that includes Chrysler, Peugeot and Fiat, had planned to trim jobs at the Toledo South Assembly Plant.
