Smith's latest appeal gives Trump case 'new legal heartbeat'
Special counsel Jack Smith's latest appeal gave the classified documents case against Donald Trump "a new legal heartbeat," a former US attorney said. Smith filed an appeal in response to Judge Aileen Cannon's dismissal of the case, in which Trump faced charges related to his removal of classified documents from the White House at the end of his term to Mar-a-Lago. Kirschner predicted Smith will be successful in his filing with the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta, citing years-long precedent.

Consumer confidence rises in August despite labor market
Consumer confidence rose in August, a report released Tuesday said. The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index rose to 103.3 from an upwardly revised 101.9 in July. Consumers who were surveyed were more positive about business conditions than in July but also are more concerned about the labor market. The number of consumers who said business conditions were "good" rose while the number who said it was "bad" decreased.

US home prices reach record highs for fourth straight month
American home prices hit a new high in June, marking the fourth consecutive month of record-setting increases, according to data released Tuesday. The latest S&P Corelogic Case-Shiller Index showed a 5.4% annual increase that represents a "decelerating trend" from May, when the gain was 5.9%. Prices rose 7.4% in the index's 10-City Composite of major metro areas, led by a 9% surge in New York City, San Diego (8.7%) and Las Vegas (8.5%).

Israel rescues hostage held since Oct. 7

Israel's military said Tuesday that it rescued a hostage being held by Hamas in Gaza since the Oct. 7 surprise attacks that sparked the latest Mideast war. Qaid Farhan Alkadi, 52, was freed from a tunnel in what the Israel Defense Forces called a "complex operation" involving members of the military and the country's security agency, known as Shin Bet. It was unclear if shots were fired or if anyone was killed or wounded. Alkadi was taken to Soroka Medical Center near Gaza.

NFL cashes in on private equity investment

National Football League owners on Tuesday voted to allow private equity investment in a landmark move that could see billions of dollars in new funding pumped into the sport. The owners of the NFL's 32 teams gave the green light to a plan that would allow a group of hand-picked private equity firms to purchase up to a 10% stake in a team. Tuesday's vote represents a change in the way NFL teams are funded. Historically, franchises have been owned by wealthy individuals.

Oasis reunion tour has English fans abuzz
