Officials were urging a lowering of tensions Sunday in Milwaukee as Republicans descend on the city for their national convention just a day after Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. The city finds itself in the eye of a political maelstrom following the violence that has shaken the campaign and prompted questions about the country's political polarization. Police were enforcing a buffer zone in the fenced-off blocks around Fiserv Forum, where GOP delegates will gather to select Trump as the party's nominee for the third time since 2016.

Biden speaks with Trump, calls for Secret Service review
President Joe Biden spoke to former President Donald Trump just hours after an assassination attempt at his rally in Pennsylvania and has directed the Secret Service to "review all security measures" for the GOP convention. Biden said "everybody must condemn" the assassination attempt on Trump. Addressing the nation after the shooting, Biden expressed relief that Trump is "doing well" adding, "We cannot allow this to be happening."

Would-be assassin was 'quiet', 'lonely' and 'socially reserved'
A 20-year-old Pennsylvania man, Thomas Matthew Crooks, was identified as the shooter who tried to assassinate former president Donald Trump at a campaign rally this weekend. Secret Service snipers killed Crooks after he fired multiple shots from a nearby rooftop. Crooks' former schoolmates described him as "quiet" and "lonely," but although he seemed "socially reserved," a former schoolmate did not recall hearing him discuss politics or Trump.

Hamas nixes truce talks after Israeli strike

A Hamas official on Sunday said the group is pulling out of Gaza truce talks, following an Israeli strike that targeted the militants' commander Mohammed Deif, who was "fine" despite the attack. Israel staged a huge bombing raid on a camp for displaced people in southern Gaza on Saturday that it said was an attempt to kill Deif. Another senior official from the Iran-backed Islamist group, which has been fighting a nine-month-long war with Israel in the Gaza Strip, said Hamas was withdrawing from ceasefire talks because of Israeli "massacres."

Late goal lifts Spain past England in Euros

Mikel Oyarzabal scored a dramatic late winner as Spain triumphed in Sunday's Euro 2024 final, beating England 2-1 to end their opponents' dreams of winning a first title in almost six decades. England came from behind as they have done so often at this Euros, as substitute Cole Palmer drove in the equalizer on 73 minutes. But their resurgence in the game was cut short as Oyarzabal turned in a cross in the 86th minute to hand Spain a record fourth European Championship crown.
