Israel starts 'ground raids' in Lebanon as US sends troops
The Israeli military said early Tuesday that troops have started "ground raids" in villages in southern Lebanon, after militant group Hezbollah said it had targeted "enemy soldiers" at the countries' border. A Lebanese security official said Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) had also conducted at least six strikes on south Beirut after Israel's army ordered residents in the Hezbollah stronghold to evacuate. Despite international calls for de-escalation, Israel earlier vowed to keep fighting Hezbollah. The US announced on Monday that it's sending a "few thousand" additional troops to the Middle East to beef up forces and defend Israel if necessary.

Officials at 14 ports along the US East and Gulf coasts made last-minute preparations on Monday for a likely labor strike that could drag on the economy just ahead of a presidential election. Fed chair hints more rate cuts likely to come before election
The US is set to see inflation cool further towards policymakers' target, Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell said Monday, with interest rates likely to come down over time, too. Powell's speech comes more than a week after the Federal Reserve slashed interest rates by half a percentage point, marking its first reduction since 2020. The move was made in response to easing inflation, but the Fed is under fire for timing the cuts just before the election.

Epic Games takes Google, Samsung to court

"Fortnite"-maker Epic Games is suing tech giants Google and Samsung, it announced Monday, accusing them of illegally colluding to block competition on Samsung devices. CEO Tim Sweeney said his company filed a claim in a federal court in California, the same jurisdiction where the company won a years-long legal battle with Google in 2023. He said he would also take the fight to authorities in Europe and Asia if necessary, amid his long-running battle to force Apple and Google to open up their smartphones to other app stores.

California passes law guarding 'neural data'

A new California law extends consumer privacy protection to brainwave data gathered by implants or wearable devices. Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law a bill amending the California Consumer Privacy Act to classify "neural data" as protected personal information like precise geolocation, genetics and biometrics. Neurorights Foundation medical director Sean Pauzauskie called the law "an enormous victory" for patients suffering from mental health disorders as well as for consumers simply looking to enhance their lives with new technologies.
