Netanyahu fires defense chief, anger erupts

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent shockwaves through the political world on Tuesday when he announced the unexpected firing of Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, who served in the role since 2022 as a member of the PM's ruling Likud Party. The surprise move came as elections are held in the U.S., Israel's top military backer. Netanyahu and Gallant have frequently clashed over Israel's retaliatory military offensive against Hamas following the Palestinian militant group's deadly attack on Israel on October 7 last year.

Florida fails to pass recreational marijuana

Florida voters failed to secure enough support to pass an amendment to the state constitution to legalized recreational marijuana use for adults 21 years and older. Despite more than 5.3 million Floridians voting yes compared with 4.3 million voting no, Amendment 3 failed to reach the 60% threshold that would have legalized recreational use of the drug. It marks a win for Gov. Ron DeSantis, who tried to keep it off the ballot earlier this year then urged voters not to support the measure.

Mount Fuji ends record span without snow

Snow finally fell on Mount Fuji today, ending the Japanese mountain's longest-ever stint with bare slopes. The national weather agency, which compares conditions in exactly the same location each year, has not yet announced a new record for the slowest formation of Mount Fuji's famous snowcap, due to cloudy conditions near its monitoring station. That makes this year the latest arrival of snow since comparative data became available in 1894, beating the previous record of October 26.
