I’m back with a springtime edition of this & that. Thanks, as always, for the thoughtful questions.
Love, |
Show you’re binge-watching right now? |
Adolescence on Netflix. It’s incredible. It’s one of the best shows I’ve seen in a long time. |
The White Lotus finale airs tonight. Which luxury wellness retreat would you pick as the backdrop for next season? |
There’s an Italian wellness spa called Palazzo Fiuggi. That might be good. I would like to see that. |
What’s on your nightstand right now? |
My earplugs. I love the new high-tech ones we sell on the site that sense when you’ve fallen asleep. And water. Lately, I’m always waking up to have water in the middle of the night. |
Your last spur-of-the-moment trip? |
A few months ago, Brad and I got invited on a spontaneous trip to the Caribbean to visit friends, which was absolutely wonderful, and something we never would have done if the kids were all still at home. And I went last week to a conference where I learned a lot and would have felt guilty going to in the past. |
What’s the item in your closet you’re reaching for the most right now? |
The Diane Trench Coat. It’s a great transitional piece—you can have just a T-shirt underneath it or you could have a thick sweater underneath it. It can act as a windbreaker. And you always look really pulled-together when you have it on. I love it. |
Mercury retrograde is ending, finally. Do you subscribe? |
All my friends do, and I’m always like, What the hell are you guys talking about? I’m sure there’s something to it. I feel that energetically in life there are ebbs and flows, and maybe it’s tied to the stars? Or maybe it’s just the way things are. I appreciate that for some people it gives a lot of context, so I’m into it for them. |
Do you participate in spring cleaning? |
I’m definitely a spring cleaner. I try to once a quarter go through and give stuff away, throw things away, and sell things on The RealReal. I try to just keep things moving through. |
Do you have a junk drawer? |
Junk drawers give me anxiety, although I do have one drawer with old chargers and cameras, and I’m just so nervous to get rid of that stuff, because I’m like, What if I need to get something off of this old memory card and I don’t have the charger? |
Most memorable meal you’ve had recently? |
Chez Fifi in New York was a really delicious meal. The most amazing steak au poivre of all time. And Crevette. They had this seafood rice dish that was so delicious. |
Eye cream is one of those things many people are ambivalent about or think they can skip in their routine… |
I used to be like that, too. What convinced me were the clinical before-and-after photos on our new retinol eye serum. That’s when I started using it every night, and I think it’s made a huge difference. I can really see a difference in the fine lines and wrinkles around my eyes—it’s unbelievable. I also think that men famously steal eye cream from their wives, and this is going to be a real secret hit with the husbands. |
Any other beauty secret weapons you’re loving? |
The Theraface Depuffing Wand—it’s good. I’ll use it in the morning, especially if I have a photo shoot. Or I’ll pack it in my carry-on when I’m flying. |
Which new pieces in the shop are you most excited about for spring? |
We have Rosie Assoulin coming back to goop this spring, and I’m really excited about that. I love that she’s this mix of classic feminine and a little bit avant-garde. There’s always something very cool about her pieces. I cannot wait to get those in the goop shop. |
It's almost pedicure season—what are your go-to nail polish colors? |
Do you have an Easter tradition? |
I always do a little Easter egg hunt for my friends’ kids—it’s my favorite thing. This year my kids won’t be around for it because they’re all in college, but last year I did all the kids’ stuff, and then I did stuff for the teenage boys, which was funny. Like lottery tickets and cash. |
Has the way you connect with your kids changed now that they’re in college? |
It’s funny you ask this. I just left my son at the Nashville airport—we were visiting Apple. I had the strangest sensation of leaving this young boy at the airport when he is in fact (of course) a completely independent young man. So in that sense, I think I must still be toggling back and forth between these two realities, one in the past and one in the present. Largely, I find this phase thrilling. She will be 21 in May, and he will be 19 next week, and I love parenting at this age—or maybe it’s time to find a new word. Relating to them or guiding them, some combination of the two. It’s a lot of FaceTime and visits when we can. But I love knowing them as adults and being here for them in ever-evolving ways. I think that’s the trick, just staying totally open and responsive to who they are and what they need as they grow up. |
The next beauty or wellness treatment you want to try? |
I would love to go to a Korean head spa in LA. There’s Cai Xiang Ge in San Gabriel and another one called Head Spa Nagomi in Beverly Hills. I really want to do that. |
Have you and Brad created any new rituals since the kids left? |
I think we are still figuring it out. If I look back at how big, meaningful changes have settled in over the course of my life, the time frame is usually a year until the event feels no longer at the forefront and everything readjusts to a comfortable new baseline. I think we both feel a bit in limbo, but we are also saying yes to things like bowling on a Tuesday night or finishing the workday with a walk. Things we wouldn’t have done during homework and bedtime. |
