One ordinary day, Miguel left his home in California to go to work. But he didn't realize then that it would be weeks before he'd be able to get back to that home.

Weeks of torrential rain caused roads to be blocked, including the area surrounding his home. "Where I live, I can't even return anymore," he said.

To help support himself and his family of four while they waited to return to their home, Miguel visited an emergency food distribution hosted by the Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Cruz. At the distribution, Miguel received a box of fresh produce, water, and shelf-stable food. "This is how we're going to eat for the week," he said. "It makes a big difference."

Whether it's a flood like the one Miguel experienced, a hurricane, or any other disaster – the Feeding America network of food banks is there before, during, and after a disaster strikes.

When the skies are clear, we work with food banks and partner agencies to place and store emergency food supplies across the country that can be quickly deployed in case of a disaster.

When disasters do strike we respond by:

  • Moving emergency food, water, and supplies into the affected area for distribution.
  • Coordinating with partners like FEMA, the American Red Cross, Salvation Army, and others to provide access to equipment and supplies.
  • Remaining in the affected communities for as long as needed, working alongside residents to support recovery efforts.

Your support is a key part of helping neighbors like Miguel get back on their feet after a disaster. We've been able to provide 8 million pounds of emergency food, and we're ready, whenever the next disaster strikes.

With gratitude,

Feeding America
