November is Native American Heritage Month. Today, as Feeding America's Director of Community Engagement with Native/Tribal Communities, I want to share with you just one of the many ways I've seen members of Native and Tribal communities honor their cultures and address hunger.

Meet Chef Ben Jacobs, a member of the Osage Nation of Oklahoma, USDA's Tribal Advisory Committee, and President Joe Biden's Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition (PCSFN).

Chef Ben is the co-founder and operator of Tocabe Indigenous Marketplace in Denver, where in addition to being a restaurateur, he prepares fresh meals in his kitchen that are delivered to pantries that serve Native Americans.

He prioritizes purchasing from native producers whenever possible to strengthen local economies and revitalize Indigenous cultures.

Ben also works with the national Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR) program, which Feeding America strongly advocates for, which distributes both food and funds to Indian Tribal Organizations while incorporating local and traditional ingredients.

We commend his commitment to Native and Tribal communities. He is helping his neighbors who are experiencing hunger while honoring their cultural heritage.

Ben will be hosting a virtual event on Indigenous Foodways on Thursday, Nov. 14. You can register to attend here.>>

Ben is just one of the people who inspires me. As we celebrate Native American Heritage Month, we celebrate the incredible people working to end hunger and continue important cultural traditions, like Ben and so many others. I hope you'll take a moment to read more of their stories here.

Ashagoteh (A heartfelt thank you),

Mark Ford
