My mother used to tell me she didn't work out of necessity, but out of love.

Mom, I'm right there with you—because today, I work out of love, too.

As a Promotora in Santa Barbara, I help connect my neighbors to all kinds of health services. And food is 80% of what I do.

As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, I can't help but think of my work and how deeply it is rooted in my Latina heritage. I learned the values of resilience, compassion, and community from my mother, and she learned from her mother before her.

I think it was watching my mom and grandmother cook and give food to local farm workers that set me on the path I'm on now.

This year, that path led me to Feeding America's Elevating Voices: Power Summit where I learned how to leverage my own story to create meaningful change. And it reinforced my belief that community is a powerful force. The Summit made it clear that I am not alone—there are countless individuals like me working to build a future free from hunger.

So, happy Hispanic Heritage Month and thank you for being here, too. This work isn't just good for the soul—it's the right thing to do.

Juntos.
