This month’s newsletter reflects some of the ways Elysium has grown as a longevity science company and become part of the cultural fabric over the past 9+ years. First, we’re pleased to share research showing that long-term use of
Basis or
Signal is associated with slower biological aging, a finding at the intersection of our two industry-leading NAD+ products, our
biological age test, and the
Aging Research Center. We also share a story from
GQ featuring Elysium chief scientist Leonard Guarente, Ph.D., and highlighting the importance of cellular health; a series of videos profiling Basis users; and an interview about healthy aging supplements with Dr. Guarente and Elysium CEO Eric Marcotulli. Finally, we want to extend our sincere thank you to our community, who has rallied together and remained positive as we navigate regulations related to NMN.

Long-term use of Basis or Signal is associated with slower biological aging

Based on epigenetic data, including from our
TIME-A longevity study, taking
Basis consistently for two or more years was associated with a ~5% slower rate of aging.* These individuals also had slower rates of aging of the liver, kidneys, and inflammation and metabolic systems.
While there was less available data for
Signal users due to Signal being a newer product, we also saw a similar ~5% reduction in the rate of aging associated with the use of Signal for one or more years. The Signal data included some users who self-reported using both Signal and Basis.
A recent study published in
Nature Aging demonstrated a 2-3% reduction in the rate of aging in individuals who reduced their caloric intake by 12% over two years. For the last century, calorie restriction (CR) has remained the gold standard for aging interventions in multiple species. The longevity benefits of CR are mediated, in part, by sirtuins—also known as “longevity genes.” Sirtuin activators, like NAD+ boosters, are considered calorie restriction mimetics for their ability to upregulate pathways activated by CR.
A manuscript is currently under preparation with the goal of publishing these results by the end of this year. TIME-A is ongoing, and we encourage all
Index users to
enroll to help us better understand the preliminary results on Basis and Signal usage and rate of aging and to continue to advance our understanding of the connection between lifestyle, demographics, and biological age.

*The epigenetic data came from 473 study participants who self-reported their supplement use. Biological age can also be influenced by various environmental and lifestyle factors and changes.

“We recently encountered a challenging situation that ultimately brought us closer to you, our Elysium community—and we want to thank you. As you know, we were required to stop selling or renewing prepaid subscriptions to our market-leading NMN product, Signal, after a pharmaceutical company petitioned to remove NMN (a natural compound) from the consumer market. After sharing this news with our community, we had the single best day in Elysium’s history. Candidly, we were surprised that our announcement was met with such overwhelming positivity. Thank you to everyone who reached out with support and enthusiasm. We’re also glad that many of you were able to secure a subscription before the deadline.
We believe the petition to eliminate access to NMN is without merit and is entirely motivated by a perceived ability to make a larger profit. Elysium will continue advocating for consumers’ right to use this incredible product, which is one of the most promising advancements in slowing aging at the cellular level. Signal is still for sale in monthly subscriptions, as well as for individual and bulk order purchases.
Thank you for being a part of the incredible Elysium community.”

“Elysium introduced the world to the concept of cellular health”
|
|
|
|
|
Last month, we shared a media story declaring that longevity is replacing wellness as the new “it” word. Cellular health is gaining similar traction. The legendary men’s magazine
GQ recently interviewed Elysium chief scientist
Leonard Guarente, Ph.D., for a feature explaining the importance of cellular health.
“The health of our cells ripple up to the health of our entire body,” Dr. Guarente tells
GQ.
“And it’s smart to intervene at the cellular level because if individual cells are better maintained, a person will stay more intact—and youthful as a whole—for longer.”
The feature is written by journalist Zoe Weiner, who explains the science behind cellular health and its relationship to
biological age. She also points to proven strategies for maintaining cellular health, including
NAD+ supplements,
senolytics, a healthy diet, exercise, adequate hydration, good sleep, and stress management. We appreciate Weiner’s rigor in separating evidence-based approaches from those that are purely marketing.
“In the years since Elysium introduced the world to the concept of cellular health, a number of other brands have begun to use the term in their marketing materials [...] many of which aren’t exactly backed by legitimate research,” she writes.

Real people love Basis. Find out why.

The double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial is the gold standard for evaluating the efficacy of health products—and that's why we've done several of them for
Basis. Here’s the next best method for gathering insights: hearing from real people who take Basis! We collected a series of videos featuring members of the Elysium community sharing about their lives and why they love Basis—including these four inspiring humans, and more. Pamela Olin is a steel sculptor. Rhys Athayde is an actor and fitness trainer. Kim Strother is a personal trainer and holistic health coach. Dr. Dan Giordano is a physical therapist and chief medical officer of Bespoke Treatments. We’re always thrilled when we get to learn more about the lives of our community, and we hope you enjoy their stories, too.

The beauty industry is taking healthy aging from the inside seriously.
Ask Us Beauty interviewed Elysium chief scientist
Leonard Guarente, Ph.D., and CEO
Eric Marcotulli for their spring 2024 “fearless” issue. They asked what sets Elysium apart and for general advice on taking supplements. Their responses? As always, it’s all about science.
“We study our own products in double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trials, and publish those studies in peer-reviewed journals, just like pharmaceutical companies do,” Dr. Guarente says.
“This represents the highest standard of scientific rigor and meets the requirements to call our products ‘science-backed.’” Flip to page 48 to read the full interview.
