We hope you’re getting ready for a joyful Thanksgiving with your friends and family. This month’s newsletter is filled with insightful longevity reading (and watching) for your holiday downtime. We have two brand new videos for you: The first is an on-demand replay of our most recent expert webinar on NAD+ and sirtuins with Leonard Guarente, Ph.D.; the second is a Q&A with leading retinal specialist and ophthalmologist Theodore Leng, M.D., where he answers all of your questions from his recent webinar. Moving from the eyes to the brain (they’re connected!), our medical director Samuel Ritter, M.D., has written a new Aging 101 about the amino acid homocysteine and its impact on brain aging and overall healthspan. On a lighter note, check out
Town & Country’s wellness holiday gift guide, which includes our
Longevity Starter Pack. Finally, a new study by Mayo Clinic researchers offers a simple and free longevity test you can do with your friends and family over Thanksgiving.

Q&A with leading retinal specialist and ophthalmologist Theodore Leng, M.D.
Last month we hosted an in-depth webinar with Theodore Leng, M.D.:
Optimizing your vision for daily life, peak performance, and eye longevity. Thanks for all your thoughtful questions during the presentation. As promised, Dr. Leng answered them in a video conversation with Whitney Christopher, Elysium’s VP of Brand. They covered a lot of ground, including floaters, glaucoma, dealing with glare in sports, the potential dangers of different kinds of light, the impact of screen time on your eyes, and many specific questions about the benefits of
Vision.
Dr. Leng is an internationally recognized specialist and thought leader in vitreoretinal diseases and surgery and has been named one of the top 150 innovators in the field of retina. He serves as the Director of Clinical and Translational Research at the Byers Eye Institute at Stanford University, where he oversees more than 50 research programs. Dr. Leng is also a member of Elysium’s Scientific Advisory Board and the product advisor for Vision.

Longevity test: How long can you stand on one leg?
Do you have room to get up and move around? Great—here’s a new evidence-based longevity assessment to take for a spin right now. A recent study by researchers at Mayo Clinic and published in
PLOS ONE found that a person's ability to stand on one leg—the non-dominant leg, in particular—is a more accurate indicator of aging than changes in strength or gait. Some members of the Elysium community gave it a try with mixed results. The good news is that improving your ability to succeed at this test may be as simple as practicing standing on one leg, walking, and doing basic leg strength exercises.
“If you can balance on your leg for 30 seconds and you're over 65, you're doing very well,” said Kenton Kaufman, senior study author and director of the Motion Analysis Laboratory at Mayo Clinic, in an interview with
AARP.
“The number that causes concern is if you can’t balance for 5 seconds.”
If you give the test a try, we’d love to see a video! Just tag us @elysiumhealth in your video and we’ll feature you in our stories.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH
“I have been taking a cocktail of Elysium’s supplements for several years -
Basis,
Matter,
Signal, and
Mosaic. Although I’m 86 years old, I look and feel decades younger. As a symphony musician, I continue to maintain a busy performance schedule; serve on the Board of Directors of my local symphony as Director of Education, grant writer, and program notes writer. I work in my garden, and have an active social life. The correlation of my lifestyle with taking these supplements is too obvious to miss. I never miss a dose!”
