We’ve been committed to making longevity science accessible since we founded Elysium in 2015—and it’s a privilege to see interest in the field grow exponentially. In the August newsletter, we share a few new ways Elysium and longevity science are showing up in culture: co-founders Eric Marcotulli and Dan Alminana were interviewed by the Nasdaq Entrepreneurial Center, and
Vogue and
Women’s Health both mention
Index in stories about longevity and biological aging. Also this month, Russell Foster, Ph.D., answers your most pressing sleep questions; a new Aging 101 about circadian rhythms; and we remember the life of eminent cell biologist and aging research pioneer Leonard Hayflick, Ph.D.

Entrepreneurial Center features Elysium co-founders Eric Marcotulli and Dan Alminana
Elysium co-founders Eric Marcotulli and Dan Alminana were recently interviewed by the Nasdaq Entrepreneurial Center for the Faces of Entrepreneurship series. Eric and Dan have spent nearly a decade building Elysium with the aim of helping people access, understand, and benefit from scientific breakthroughs in longevity. They were honored to share some of their experience from behind the scenes. Here’s a preview of the conversation—read the full interview by following the link below.
“If Elysium can continue to lead the adoption of these [longevity] technologies by consumers and play a part in the world’s acceptance of longevity science, we will consider our efforts a great success.” - Eric Marcotulli, Elysium CEO and co-founder
“If we achieve our mission of giving people the most impactful products that address key areas of aging, we have a real chance of improving the health of the world—it would be incredibly gratifying to be a part of that story.” - Dan Alminana, Elysium COO and co-founder

Not Just an NAD+ Booster
Unlike other NAD+ boosters,
Basis contains
two ingredients that activate your “longevity genes” by
two separate mechanisms. Together, they work synergistically to support healthy aging.

Sleep expert Russell Foster, Ph.D., answers your questions
Last month we hosted a very special webinar with renowned sleep expert Russell Foster, Ph.D.:
Sleep, Circadian Rhythms, and Health: Looking Forward to Healthy Aging. We were thrilled that so many of you attended and submitted excellent questions for Dr. Foster following the event. As promised, Dr. Foster answered them in great detail in a video conversation with
Dayle Sampson, Ph.D., Elysium’s vice president of bioinformatics. They covered a lot of ground, including questions about
melatonin, growth hormone, travel jet lag, shift work, and more.
Dr. Foster is professor of circadian neuroscience and head of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Oxford, a member of the Elysium Scientific Advisory Board, and the principal investigator for our sleep and longevity study,
TIME-ZZZ.

AGING 101
What is your circadian rhythm (and how does it impact your health)?
A circadian rhythm is a physiological pattern your body follows based on the 24-hour cycle, such as sleeping and waking, metabolism, and body temperature. Here’s what you need to know about circadian rhythms and how to keep them aligned for health and longevity. (Read more)

Remembering Leonard Hayflick, Ph.D., cellular senescence and aging pioneer
Leonard Hayflick, Ph.D., a cell biologist who set the field of aging research in motion with his discovery of “cell senescence,” died on August 1 at age 96. In 1961, Dr. Hayflick discovered that normal human cells in culture have a limited lifespan. They divide between 40 and 60 times before becoming irreversibly arrested in a nondividing state, which they called “senescence at the cellular level.” This finding, known as the Hayflick limit, challenged the idea that normal cells are immortal.
"Dr. Hayflick’s classic papers in the 1960s on cellular senescence first demonstrated that aging occurs at the cellular level, and led to the idea that the accumulation of senescent cells is an important factor in human aging," said
Leonard Guarente, Ph.D., Elysium’s chief scientist.
The Hayflick limit is caused by the shortening of telomeres, which are repetitive DNA elements at the ends of chromosomes that help maintain their integrity. With each round of cell division, telomeres shorten until they can no longer keep the DNA intact, causing cells to stop dividing and enter senescence. Cellular senescence can also be triggered by other factors, including environmental and internal stressors, abnormal cell growth, and oxidative stress. Senescent cells contribute to the aging process.

In case you missed it,
biological age tests have made their way into pop culture, attracting the attention of the Kardashians—a family known for their influence and, well, plenty of controversy. Still, we’re glad to see the growing enthusiasm for longevity science—including in the media outlets that picked up the narrative. Women’s Health and
Vogue featured stories about
biological aging and longevity, and both mentioned
Index.
The stories make the important point that many available biological age and longevity tests lack scientific credibility. This is where Index stands apart. Precision and reliability are significant challenges for measuring biological age at the individual level. To develop the most precise and reliable test, Elysium partnered with Morgan Levine, Ph.D., of Yale University—a leading epigenetics researcher. Index leverages a unique machine learning solution demonstrated in
Nature Aging to be the most precise and reliable among published epigenetic age measures.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH
“I take both
Basis and
Matter! I believe it has helped me with my aging process and cognitive abilities...My brother in law, who is a doctor, first recommended Basis to me 5 years ago! When Matter came out he said to take it but keep taking Basis! He recommends it to all his patients!”
