The gorgeous countryside of Umbria sits north of Rome in the middle of the Italian "boot". It borders Tuscany to the west, Lazio to its south, and the coastal region Le Marche to the east. Umbria is a bastion for value in Italian wine, and a source for some of the finest - albeit lesser known - vineyards in the entire country.
A prime example is the Vitalonga estate, where you will find rolling hillside vineyards that are drenched in sunlight from morning to night. You might expect to find a typical Sangiovese or Sagrantino based wine as a dynamic red here, but this forward-thinking winery has planted some Bordeaux varieties to showcase the incredible Umbrian terroir.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese - a nod to tradition - combine for the Elcione Rosso. What a show this one is!
