Women’s Day

Since 2012, we’ve named our planters after beloved green spaces and trailblazers who’ve made a lasting impact in the plant world. Meet three inspired by remarkable women:
Named for Dr. Isabella Abbott, a groundbreaking ethnobotanist from Hawaii who specialized in marine algae research. She shattered barriers throughout her prolific career — becoming the first Native Hawaiian to earn a PhD in science and later, Stanford University’s first female biology professor and first professor of color.

A tribute to Susanna Bixby Bryant, an American horticulturist, botanical collector, and rancher. She inherited over 5,000 acres of Rancho Santa Ana and recognized the need to protect California’s native plants. Her efforts led to the creation of a 200-acre native garden (now the California Botanic Garden) home to over 45,000 native plant species.

Honoring Ynes Mexia, a fearless Mexican-American explorer and the most accomplished female botanical collector of her time. She found her passion for botany in her 40s and spent the next two decades traveling, often solo, throughout Latin America, discovering hundreds of new plant species along the way.
