3 Stealthy Endocrine Disruptors (Bathtime Edition) Even healthy habits can expose us to chemicals that wreak havoc on our hormones. In this two-part series, we’ll cover endocrine disruptors that you may not think about: this week, three in your bathroom and three in your workout next. 1. Plastic tubes Many products, even those with a clean ingredient list, come in plastic containers which often contain endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDC’s) called phthalates. Phthalates are especially common in tubes since they’re used to make plastic more pliable. EDC’s from plastic packaging can leach into products like toothpaste, body lotion, shampoo, and soap. Look for packaging labeled BPA free or try glass or packaging made from sugarcane like we use for Milk Cleanse. 2. Tap water EDC's from industrial waste and pharmaceuticals end up in our tap water. So brushing teeth, soaking in the tub, and breathing the steam from a long, hot shower can expose us to endocrine disruptors. Consider filters for your bathroom tap and shower. 3. Unscented products Products labeled "unscented" can contain synthetic fragrance used to mask natural odors. Look for "fragrance free" instead.
