In Stock Now: 2022s from François Carillon "Bravo!" — Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy The Carillon family has been cultivating grapes in Puligny-Montrachet for nearly 500 years. Historical records from the region trace the family's presence back to 1520, detailing the life and work of Jean Carillon. Since the 1960s, the estate has been exclusively planted to Chardonnay, with a few small plots of Aligoté. Growing up among the family vineyards, François Carillon decided in 2010 to launch his own project, focusing on the terroir to produce the highest-quality grapes. Deeply committed to an environmentally friendly and precise approach to vine-growing, François employs horse-drawn plowing, lutte raisonnée with 100% natural products, vine composting, Guyot pruning, and green harvesting to maintain low yields. His meticulous vineyard management results in wines of exceptional quality. Consistently crafting profound Puligny-Montrachet expressions, the 2022s from Carillon are no exception.
2022 Domaine François Carillon Bourgogne Aligoté ($29.99) Burghound: "A wonderfully fresh nose freely reveals its aromas of green apple, pear compote, spice and citrus rind. The racy, delicious and nicely textured and detailed flavors conclude in a clean and moderately dry finale shaped by bright acidity. This isn't especially complex but it is refreshing and offers just enough depth to keep the next sip coming.*Burghound Outstanding Top Value!*" (06/2024) John Gilman: "Lively pineapple yellow. A touch of sandalwood from the large wood. They like to pick ripe, and this has worked because they have maintained the freshness while ensuring considerable character in the grape. Good tension at the back, lemon and mirabelle finish. To bottle January. Drink from 2024-2026." (01/2024) 2022 Domaine François Carillon Bourgogne Blanc ($44.99) 94 points Decanter: "TOP VALUE Abundant ripe apple, hawthorn flowers, butter and spice aromas. Dense but not heavy, with plenty of balancing acidity. The grapes come from a half-hectare of old vines outside the Puligny village appellation area near the border with Meursault. Superb: an excellent option for a Puligny lookalike crafted with care and precision.(CC)" (01/2024) 87-90 points Jasper Morris: "Within Femelottes, old vines on riparia. Early and aromatic. A fullish yellow, with a more immediate ripe grape bouquet than the regular. Opulent for a generic Bourgogne yet with class. The power on the palate is impressive, with a huge weight in the middle and at the back. At least the intensity of a village wine. Not for those looking for elegance, but superb in its own style. Drink from 2025-2028." (01/2024) Burghound: "A discreet if still easily perceptible application of wood sets off slightly riper though still fresh aromas of just sliced apple, lemon-lime and a floral top note. The richer and slightly more concentrated medium weight flavors also possess a lovely texture on the balanced finish that isn't quite as complex but it is longer. I suspect that more depth will develop if this is allowed a few years of keeping and overall, this is warmly recommended.*Burghound Outstanding Top Value!*" (06/2024) 2022 Domaine François Carillon Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru "Les Macherelles" ($189.99) 90-92 points Jasper Morris: "One of the fuller colours. This has taken on quite a crunchy, almost savoury aspect, and has a saline grapey character too. On balance, I find this less fine than the village Chassagne. Drink from 2027-2033." (01/2024) 2022 Domaine François Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Champ Gain" ($199.99) 91-93 points Burghound: "Note: from 4 parcels near Dents de Chien that measure less than 2 ha. Here the nose is compositionally quite different as it manifests notes of petrol, iodine and a shellfish hint along with plenty of floral nuances. Here is both fine punch and concentration to the sappy and solidly powerful medium-bodied flavors that also exude evident minerality on the impressively persistent and firm finale. This won't win any awards for finesse but the fine quality is unassailable.*Burghound Outstanding!*" (06/2024) 90-93 points Jasper Morris: "A clearer colour and a cleaner nose, both of which are a question of stage rather than the fundamentals. This is clean, pure and attractive, if maybe less characterful, and as François Carillon says, I have better premiers crus in Puligny, whereas the St-Aubin is a different price point. Good finish though. Drink from 2027-2033." (01/2024) 2022 Domaine François Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Les Folatières" ($209.99) 92-95 points Jasper Morris: "A clear bright mid primrose yellow. The bouquet suggests a balanced generosity and indeed Folatières is fuller on the palate, delivering a touch more than Champ Gain, but also refines beautifully at the back of the palate. This is a classy Folatières that is happy to put itself forward for reasonably early drinking. Drink from 2028-2034." (01/2024) 90-93 points Burghound: "Note: from a .5 ha parcel of old vines in Peux Bois and Ez Folatières. Smoky aromas of mineral reduction, citrus confit, white peach and a hint of passion fruit are trimmed in an array of spice elements. The super-sleek and well-detailed flavors possess similar concentration while offering a succulent mouthfeel, all wrapped in a stony and powerful finale. Once again, more depth would be a plus but the underlying material appears to be present such that it should develop over time.*Burghound Outstanding!*" (06/2024) 2022 Domaine François Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Combettes" ($219.99) 95 points Decanter: "The Combettes comes from 0.80 hectares near the border with Meursault. The grapes are carefully sorted before being pressed as whole clusters and fermented in cask (25% new). The result is among the richest wines in the cellar, with a dense, almost tropical character to the fruit. There is more butter and hazelnut than the incisive flintiness of the Perrières bottling, but this wine carries its weight well. With a few years in the bottle, this should open nicely and drink well for decades.(CC)" (01/2024) 92-95 points Jasper Morris: "Medium yellow. A fine and balanced bouquet, suggesting the sunny generosity of Combettes. I like the precision here though, with a little biscuity touch as well, and possible a touch more warmth, but all in control. Notably persistent. Drink from 2028-2035." (01/2024) 91-94 points Burghound: "Note: from a .78 ha parcel of vines planted in 1995. This is aromatically similar to the Folatières though with the addition of a hint of Granny Smith apple along with a dollop of oak. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the lightly stony middleweight flavors that possess a notably finer, even delicate, mouthfeel that carries over to the clean, dry and lingering finale. This is very classy and I very much like the balance.*Burghound Sweet Spot Outstanding!*" (06/2024) 2022 Domaine François Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Les Perrières" ($219.99) 96 points Decanter: "This powerful, thrilling wine has ripe green apple and pear aromas and hints of flint, smoke, and spice. A racy acidity, even from the heat of the 2022 vintage, carries the impressively dense extract to an interminable finish. The grapes are from two parcels that François Carillon farms in the centre of Puligny Perrières, north of Boillot's monopole Clos de la Mouchère. They are pressed as whole clusters and fermented in cask (15% new), where they age for a year, followed by a further year in tank.(CC)" (01/2024) 93-96 points Jasper Morris: "Fine bright mid lemon. The bouquet is discreet but powerful this is the one which needs waiting for, it just offers that little bit extra, a very complete rendition in François Carillons forthright style. Retasting the last three, the Puligny-Montrachet Les Perrières definitely has it all. Bravo! Drink from 2029-2036." (01/2024) 91-93 points Burghound: "Note: from a .50 ha parcel. Airy and cool aromas are comprised by notes of primarily citrus zest, just sliced apple and a whiff of mineral reduction. Here too the palate impression of the medium weight flavors is refined, if not quite as refined as that of the Combettes, while delivering fine length on the detailed and youthfully austere finale. This is lovely and if perhaps not quite as classy, it is still stylish and appealing.*Burghound Outstanding!*" (06/2024) |
