I would consider myself someone who has consumed a lot of content about hormones. But I had never really fathomed how hormonal changes impact the brain until I read neuroscientist Lisa Mosconi’s new book, The Menopause Brain.
There were many passages in the book that I wanted to double click on, which I got the chance to do a few weeks ago in a conversation with Lisa. The low point of this conversation was that Lisa told me that smoking 100 cigarettes over the course of your entire life may lower your age of menopause. Unfortunately, there were periods of 1997 where I likely cleared that number in a single week.
But that aside, I left our conversation with so much optimism about the work Lisa is doing and the ways in which it could empower us and better equip us to navigate hormonal changes—with more knowledge and greater health. I was struck by the way Lisa so beautifully articulates menopause as an opportunity to feel and see the expansive and inherent value of women, which extends well beyond any reproductive window.
Love, Gwyneth
